Anong Gagawin Ko sa Buhay Ko? Dealing with Uncertainty and Fear of the Future

Let’s be real.

It’s hard to stay positive when everyone online looks like they have their shit together. You scroll through Instagram, and there's your high school classmate who just bought a condo.

Your cousin just passed the board exam with flying colors.

Meanwhile, you?

You're sitting in your room wondering if you should go back to sleep or cry first.

If you’ve ever asked yourself, "Anong gagawin ko sa buhay ko?"—trust me, you’re not alone.

This is the quiet, terrifying question echoing in the minds of so many young Filipinos today.

Let’s break it down, face it head-on, and figure out what the hell we’re supposed to do with this messy thing called life.

We’re Raised to Be “Successful”—But What Does That Even Mean?

Growing up in the Philippines, we’re taught that success looks like becoming a nurse, engineer, doctor, or OFW.

If you’re not ticking those boxes, people will assume you’re failing at life.

Add social media pressure to the mix, and suddenly everyone’s comparing themselves to influencers who seem to be 22, rich, flawless, and drinking coffee in Paris. But here’s the tea: most of that sh*t is staged.

We’re not broken.

The system is.

Mental trap:

“If I’m not successful now, I never will be.

Reality check:

Growth is not linear. Life doesn’t care about your timeline. And by the way, you’re not behind—you’re just overwhelmed and human.

The Philippine Reality Hits Hard

Let’s not sugarcoat it:

  • Minimum wage vs. cost of living? A joke.

  • Education? Expensive AF.

  • Job market? Saturated. Underpaid. Competitive.

  • Mental health support? Still taboo in many places.

Most of us are not lazy—we’re exhausted.

We're trying to survive in a system that wasn’t built for us to thrive.

Example:

May diploma ka na nga, pero saan ang trabaho?

Nag-a-apply ka sa 50 companies and ang response?

“We regret to inform you...” or worse, wala man lang reply.

It’s enough to make anyone question their worth.

But remember:

Struggling in a broken system doesn't mean you’re a failure.

It means you're fighting harder than most.

HOW DO WE OVERCOME IT? (Spoiler: Slowly, Imperfectly, But Surely)

First off—breathe.

You don’t need to have it all figured out right now.

Here are real, unfiltered things you can do:

  • Stop comparing.

Minsan, nakaka-toxic din yung kakascroll. Set boundaries online.

  • Try different things.

You don’t need to get it right the first time. Hindi ka fail kung nagpalit ka ng path.

  • Talk to people.

Open up to friends, mentors, or even strangers online. You’ll be surprised how many people feel the same.

  • Accept detours.

Minsan yung “Plan B” becomes the best thing that ever happened to you.

LESSONS TO REMEMBER

  • You’re allowed to feel lost. It doesn’t make you weak.

  • Progress can be quiet, slow, and ugly—but it still counts.

  • Social media isn’t real life. Don’t let it dictate your worth.

  • There’s no deadline to success. Kahit late bloomer ka, bunga ka pa rin.

  • It's okay to choose peace over pressure.

Final Thoughts:

Your future doesn’t need to be Instagrammable.

It just needs to be yours.

Messy, honest, and meaningful.

So the next time you ask, “Anong gagawin ko sa buhay ko?”

Say this instead: “Wala pa akong sagot ngayon, pero hindi ibig sabihin wala akong mararating.”

You’ve got this, kahit mabagal, kahit madilim pa.

Trust the small steps.

They matter more than you think.
